Showcasing expertise in agriculture, teaching, and career achievements.

I have always believed that agriculture is more than an industry—it is a way of life built on hard work, resilience, creativity, and service to others. My journey into agriculture began at a young age when I joined a local 4-H club and was gifted my first dairy goat. Although I grew up in a small farming town, I did not come from a farming family. Both of my parents were teachers. To keep me busy and out of trouble, my mom agreed that I could raise livestock, as long as I worked to pay for my animals’ room and board myself. By the age of nine, I learned one of life’s greatest lessons: nothing in life is free, and if you want something, you must be willing to work for it. That one dairy goat sparked a passion for agriculture that would shape the course of my life.
I graduated from California State University, Fresno with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Business with an emphasis in Ornamental Horticulture. During college, I discovered my passion for the floral industry while working at the Fresno State Floral Lab. I have always loved the arts, and floral design allowed me to combine creativity with agriculture in a meaningful way. What started as a college job soon became a 26-year career in floral design, event production, and agricultural business.
Before graduating, I launched my own freelance floral design studio while simultaneously working as a Shipping Manager for a flower grower. One of my favorite parts of the floral industry was traveling throughout California designing weddings and special events while building relationships with clients and industry professionals. I loved creating experiences and helping celebrate important moments in people’s lives through floral artistry.
My career eventually expanded beyond the floral industry into other areas of agriculture. During the economic downturn, I worked for The Elliott Group, a company involved in citrus production, juice processing, international shipping, and corrugated manufacturing. I started in sales and eventually worked my way into the role of Grower Accounting Manager. I later gained additional experience in pistachio processing while working for Santa Barbara Pistachio as both an Accountant and Shipping Manager. Each position strengthened my understanding of agriculture from production to processing, logistics, business management, and international trade.
My journey into agricultural education began in 2016 when I was encouraged to apply for an agriculture teaching position at Bakersfield Christian High School. Although I had spent over 20 years substitute teaching and had previously served as an adjunct floral design instructor, I never imagined becoming a full-time educator. I loved the fast-paced world of the agricultural industry, but I also discovered that I genuinely loved working with young adults and helping them discover their own passions and potential.
While raising three children and running a one-person agriculture department, I simultaneously pursued my Master’s Degree in Agricultural Education from California Polytechnic State University while completing my CTE credential coursework. Within three years, I earned both my Master’s Degree and teaching credentials while growing the agriculture program from 30 students to 90 students at a school with an enrollment of only 450.
During my time there, our chapter earned its first State FFA Degree recipients, two State FFA Proficiency Winners, and its first National Proficiency Finalist. I coached numerous Career and Leadership Development Events including Opening and Closing Ceremonies, public speaking events, floral judging, livestock judging, Ag Banking, and record book competitions. I also supervised a wide variety of livestock projects including swine, goats, beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, horses, rabbits, cavies, and poultry. Watching students develop confidence, leadership skills, and a passion for agriculture quickly became one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
I was fortunate to have incredible mentors guiding me during those early years in agricultural education. Former professors, regional supervisors, and fellow agriculture teachers continually challenged and encouraged me to grow. Their support inspired me to pursue excellence not only for myself, but for every student who entered my classroom.
That drive eventually led me to Frontier High School, where I spent the next seven years teaching in a larger agriculture program serving more than 470 students. At Frontier, I was able to combine my background in floral design and agricultural business by securing a grant to build a fully operational on-campus floral shop. This gave students real-world experience in floral design, entrepreneurship, customer service, inventory management, and event production.
Throughout my teaching career, I have taught Floral Design I & II, Agricultural Economics and Government, Veterinary Science, Agricultural Biology, Introductory Agricultural Mechanics, Advanced Plant and Animal Science, and Intro to Agricultural Physical Science. I have also worked to develop new A-G approved curriculum to ensure agriculture courses meet college preparatory standards. My Floral Design and Veterinary Science courses are dual-enrollment classes through Bakersfield College, allowing students to earn transferable college credit while still in high school.
Coaching Career and Leadership Development Event teams has also become one of my greatest passions. Over the years, I have coached teams in Cotton Judging, Citrus Judging, California Water Issues, Agronomy, Floral Judging, Extemporaneous Speaking, Job Interview, Ag Banking, Cooperative Marketing, and Opening and Closing Ceremonies. One area I became especially passionate about was helping students excel in their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects and proficiency award applications. I have had the privilege of helping students earn sectional, regional, state, and national recognition through their hard work and dedication.
Beyond the classroom, I have served in leadership roles within the California Agricultural Teachers' Association and have helped lead curriculum development efforts for Floral Design and Animal Science courses within Kern High School District. My goal has always been to create rigorous, accessible, industry-relevant curriculum that prepares students for both college and careers.
One of the most rewarding chapters of my career has been mentoring future agriculture educators and returning to higher education as an adjunct Floral Design professor at Bakersfield College. I have also enjoyed hosting floral design workshops and professional development sessions throughout California for college students, educators, and community members. Working with both high school and college students continues to inspire me every day.
Agriculture has also become a major part of my family life. Inspired by one of my daughters’ SAE projects, our family launched Downs Family Farms, specializing in specialty cut flowers and vegetables. What began as a student project evolved into a family-operated business involving all of my children throughout their high school careers. Watching my children work together, develop their skills, and discover their own passions within agriculture has been one of my greatest joys as both a mother and an educator.
Looking back on my journey through 4-H, FFA, the floral industry, agriculture business, and education, I can clearly see how every experience prepared me for where I am today. I truly believe I was meant to teach. Agriculture has given me the opportunity to combine creativity, leadership, mentorship, business, and service into one fulfilling career centered around helping others grow.
As Robert H. Schuller once said, “Anyone can count the seeds in an apple, but only God can count the number of apples in a seed.”
I believe every student has potential waiting to grow, and I am passionate about helping young people discover their purpose, develop their talents, and build a life they truly love.

My path to teaching was not traditional. I entered the profession after more than a decade in
industry, bringing with me practical experience, real-world business and operational
expertise, and a deep respect for applied learning. That experience shapes my instructional
approach at the collegiate level. I believe students learn best when theory is connected to
real-world application, when relevance is clear, and when rigor is paired with support.
As an educator in agriculture and agribusiness, I approach each lesson with one central
question: Why does this matter? If students understand the purpose and application of what
they are learning, engagement follows. I design instruction that integrates experiential
learning, case studies, enterprise-based projects, and problem-solving scenarios that mirror
industry realities. My classroom reflects the agricultural sector itself—practical, analytical,
adaptable, and forward-thinking.
I am committed to creating an inclusive and respectful learning environment where students
feel safe to question, explore, and occasionally fail. Mistakes are not setbacks; they are part
of the learning process. I challenge students to become comfortable with intellectual
discomfort because meaningful growth often occurs outside of familiarity. At the same time, I
emphasize accountability, professionalism, and high expectations. Success may look different
for each learner, but effort, integrity, and perseverance are universal standards.
Relationship-building is foundational to my teaching philosophy. I seek to understand my
students’ backgrounds, goals, and skill levels so that instruction can be responsive and
relevant. By knowing my students, I can adjust delivery methods, incorporate multiple
modalities, and ensure accessibility for a diverse population of learners. Confidence grows
when students experience achievement, and that confidence often becomes contagious
within the learning community.
I encourage students to take ownership of their educational journey. Through applied
learning and structured reflection, they learn not only course content but also resilience,
leadership, and critical thinking skills that extend beyond the classroom. My goal is not simply
to deliver content but to empower students with knowledge, confidence, and the ability to
continue learning long after they leave my course.
As a faculty member, I remain a lifelong learner. I value professional growth, industry
engagement, and collaboration with colleagues and industry leaders to ensure that the
curriculum remains current and meaningful. Ultimately, my success as an educator is
reflected in the legacy of students who enter their professions prepared, adaptable, and
willing to make a difference in their communities.

Throughout my career as an agricultural educator, I have been passionate about sharing knowledge, building confidence, and helping others grow within the floral industry. I have hosted numerous hands-on floral design workshops for fellow agriculture teachers, providing practical training, industry techniques, and creative inspiration they can take back to their own classrooms. Beyond secondary education, I have also facilitated floral workshops for college students and community members, using floral design as a creative outlet to promote connection, wellness, and personal growth. Over the past 10 years in agricultural education, I have had the privilege of mentoring seven student teachers, helping guide and support the next generation of agriculture educators as they develop their own teaching style, confidence, and passion for the profession.
